The effect of academic performance on the academic health of adolescents
Social scientists are having a growing interest in the academic health and performance to adolescents who seek to find the potential effects on some of the behaviors and how they affect their academic achievement.
Research to this topic has neither been consistent nor robust which have been attributed some of the analytical designs that have limited some of the methodological ways one can use in measuring a person’s health behaviors and an adolescent’s academic performance. Other factors such as their age, culture, population sample are known to prove a difficult issue to this study.
Poor academic performance is a known risk factor for adolescents, yet it is unclear as there exists no study in their social ties. Many learning institutions are increasingly involving their efforts in promoting health and healthy behavior among adolescent students, however, does that mean that healthier students are better learners? The above study investigated the effects of the most major health-related behaviors such as alcohol and marijuana use, smoking, nutrition, physical activity, sexual intercourse, bullying, and screen time use e.g. television, Internet, video games on the academic performance of adolescents.
There exist several studies that come from various field e.g. psychological, educational, medical and social science literature. Healthy nutrition and team sports participation were found to have a positive effect on one’s academic performance, whereas the effects of alcohol use, smoking, early sexual intercourse, bullying, and certain screen time behaviors were totally negative. Generally, all relations of health-related behaviors and academic performance were reliant on contextual influences which are often facilitated by psychosocial issues, demographics, and social structures.
There exists a large pool of evidence that seeks to explain is there is a relationship between health and a person’s education performance. Many of the studies show that there exists a positive correlation between the two and that education is the main factor that predetermines health. So, what are some of the factors that affect that academic performance of adolescents?
There exist many factors that contribute to this which determine a person’s health and their academics. External factors are known to simultaneously affect both a user’s education and health and that a person’s socio-economic status is one of the reasons that cause this. A person’s investments are understood to be the main concern and thus not being able to take care of your health leads to other related behaviors that are known to hinder a person’s learning ability.
Risk factors such as drug use, nutritional deficiencies, obesity and overweight, sleep disorders, smoking, and other physical activities are known to strike various incidents to adolescents such as depression which makes them significantly more likely to smoke. Studies show that adolescents who are more likely to engage in binge drinking were more likely to have negative effects on their academic performance than their fellow counterparts who do not smoke or use hard drugs.
Many researchers explain that the constant use of these drugs bring associations with other effects such as sleeping disorders, behavioral problems and other incidence s of anxiety and thus explain that the above conditions are considered important and so it is important to avoid considering health behaviors in isolation to an adolescent’s health.
Health can influence education not only directly but also through the factors listed above. The outwardly vigorous finding to some of the impacts of drug consumption on educational performance complements in interesting ways mixed findings that concern the effect of alcohol consumption on certain adult productivity levels. It is imperative for one to note that poor health factors have a negative correlation with an adolescent’s academic performance. However, many methodological issues require verification in identifying some of the indicators considered above.
For higher academic performance, limits should be placed on the time people spend engaging in some of the above factors that seem to reduce their performances substantially. An increase in the range of healthy nutritional alternatives is required to improve an adolescent’s health and the nutritional achievements required to improve their achievement.
